“I take my career as if it’s a painting, and right now, I’m still painting it.” These words from Slezzy K perfectly sum up his journey as an upcoming artist striving to make a name for himself. Fresh off the release of his latest mixtape, CRUX, which features collaborations with various artists, Slezzy is determined to carve out his place in the industry.
Slezzy K always believed he was destined for greatness, but it wasn’t until 2017 that he truly saw his path. Watching Cassper Nyovest fill up FNB Stadium, he had a realization: “Why am I not doing this?” At that moment sparked his drive, leading him to release his album 17, a project reflecting an undefined but pivotal time in his life. He believes pain and struggle naturally inspire raw, honest music, whether it’s a happy or sad experience, it allows listeners to hear the real artist behind the lyrics.
One of the hardest lessons Slezzy K learned is that the industry isn’t always fair. “You could be in a song with somebody, then leave the studio only to find out they replaced you with someone else,” he shares. This realization taught him to move wisely, he no longer accepts free verses or favors, knowing that people will always remind you of what they’ve done for you. Instead, he focuses on building with those who genuinely support him, ensuring that loyalty and respect go both ways.
Even when creative blocks hit, Slezzy doesn’t let them stop him. His secret? Stepping away from music for a while, going to "Shipa", listening to other artists, or simply getting fresh air to reboot his mind. This process ensures that every track he creates resonates with him and reflects his true artistry. He remains eager to work with more artists and push his craft even further.
Slezzy K wants people to feel what he felt when making his music. If it’s a track like Mamacita, he wants listeners to dance because that’s the energy he poured into it. But beyond the music, he understands the sacrifices required to build a career, he invests wisely, ensuring his money goes into his growth rather than reckless spending.
His ultimate goal? “I want to be the first South African hip-hop artist to win a Grammy.” But more than awards, he wants to leave a legacy of kindness, generosity, and respect, looking out for others the same way he wishes the industry had done for him.
Slezzy K is still painting his masterpiece, and the world is watching as he brings it to life.
